PLEASANTLY PLEASED September 8, 2010 CHICO When I hit the "buy it" button I suffered a few days of buyer's remorse. Principally because of all the reviews that beat up on this product. Mostly "wouldn't start" comments that revealed a thorough avoidance of the owners manual. After reading the manual and preparing the unit for starting, (fuel, oil, etc.) I set all the controls according to the manual, pulled the starter cord three times and it started without a hitch. Since then, I've never had to pull the cord more than three times to start and run flawlessly. Satisfied?; oh yes! And I'm operating a 12" planer (16 amps)like the power is coming straight from the wall. I'd recommend it, if you can read and follow directions.
Great generator ... for a few days ... September 6, 2010 moongovernor I bought this generator for a month long trip down the Mississippi. I needed it to power the fridge and outlets and recharge the boats batteries if they died.
We used this generator and it ran great for a few days. It ran for probably 8-10 hours straight without any problems.
Then, for no apparent reason, it started dying randomly. Sometimes it would run for an hour or two and then quit, and sometimes it would only run for 20 minutes before it would die.
We checked everything, but couldn't find the source of the problem - it wasn't overloading, the oil level was good, the breaker wasn't resetting. After poring over the user's manual and racking our brains, we eventually resigned ourselves to restarting it umpteen times a day (which is fortunately easy - it starts like a dream).
Amazon won't let you return these because of the gas, and we never stopped near enough to a Honeywell service center to get it fixed.
When it ran, this generator worked great - it powered everything we needed it to, it wasn't too noisy, and efficiency mode worked well.
My advice - if you're going to need to rely on a generator (and you're not going to be near a Honeywell service center), spend the extra money and buy a Honda.
FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT September 6, 2010 Richard Lucky (Hi Desert, SO Cal, USA) I purchased a Honeywell 2000I from Costco. The first one I bought was extremely hard to start (usually 15-20 pulls). I was leaving on an extended vacation so I used it anyway. There is a local service center in my area and I called him about it when I got home but he was backlogged so I took it back to Costco. As usual, returns are no problem there and I got a replacement but when I got it home, I found that the case had about a 1/4 inch gap along the seam. I took it back the next day and finally got a good one, starts on the first or second pull and works well. It is larger, heavier and not as quiet as a Honda but it costs A LOT less. If you get a good one, and don't mind the larger, heavier and noisier generator, you will be happy with it but Honeywell really needs to work on their quality control, they claim that they are pre-started at the factory, if that is true, that first unit I had should never have made it thru and the second one with the split case certainly shouldn't have. They're made in China so that may explain the quality control issue.
Looking for a good generator? Look elsewhere! August 31, 2010 darinoshea 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Some have compared this unit to brands that cost twice as much. That isn't fair, however that being said, it doesn't compare well to other generators either.
Right out of the box it didn't run well on efficiency mode. It revved up and down with no load or a light load (under 500 watts roughly). I called the 1-800 starting help line and eventually spoke to someone who confirmed this was not normal and referred me to a service center for warranty service. The service center had never a Honeywell generator before.(How did they become an authorized service center, I wonder?) After a few days they said it was fixed however they were not certain that warranty would cover it, so I had two choices Pay the service charges or leave it with the service center until the claim was paid. They said it would take weeks for the claim to be paid or rejected. I paid instead of waiting weeks and found that they had turned the idle screw to eliminate the efficiency mode. needless to say I was upset.
I have since contacted Honeywell generators (NPS) and been promised reimbursement on two separate occasions to no avail.
While it is a bit quieter than other generators I would have been better off purchasing a non-inverter generator or paying double for a name brand (I thought Honeywell was one.)
Overall, Do not buy thinking you are getting something like the more expensive brands. efficiency mode is useless unless you can deal with the engine surging and almost stalling. Don't buy this unit and save the money for a name brand or name brand non-inverter and count yourself ahead!
Dont waste your money August 10, 2010 anniek This unit is a lot larger and heavier than other similar inverters. I was willing to live with that for the price if it ran well, but unfortunatley, it didn't. After the first couple of hours of operation, it began to stall every 15 minutes. It would start right back up, but that doesn't help me, I use it to power computer equipment. Spend the money and get a good on.
