4 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Camping Generator   September 16, 2008

For the most part I am happy with this generator. It seems to do the job. However, it has 2 glitches that need to be noted. The fuel guage window has become more and more opaque over the short 3 months that I have owned the generator. The plastic used in the guage window is obviously not fuel vapor resistant- However, I can live with this. One other note- The fuel line turn-off valve (the one below the tank) leaks slightly when in the "flow on" position. I think I can replace it with a simple motorcycle tank valve that it closely resembles. Other than these two items- It works just great and the price was absolutely right.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the watt power for using this product   August 29, 2008

I live in hurricane alley at the foot of the Gulf of Mexico. After suffering through Katrina and after carefully studying my minimum needs for emergency power I bought this product. I am very happy with it.

I have installed a small manual transfer switch which can use six of my main box breakers. My fridge runs at 600 watts but the start up surge is 1800 watts. I will start this up first before adding the load of my two window A/C units, which both run at 650 watts and have a very little need for extra wattage start up surge.

The necessary run surge as compared to the 3X start up surge on some appliances, was, at first, hard for me to understand. But is a vital piece of knowledge before knowing how powerful a generator to buy.

This unit cannot be expected to run a 2000 watt appliance that has a 6000 watt surge need. But if you stagger your appliance's on line startups, this unit can fit your needs, and can run for 3-4 hours per gallon of gas at 50% load. Larger, more powerful generators are great IF purchasing emergency gasoline is not a problem.

3 out of 5 stars Caution rather than review   August 28, 2008

I rated this middle of the road because I had to provide a rating in order to comment. From what I see it looks like a good value for a generator that won't be used a lot.

However be careful about how much power it will provide. It is rated for 3000 watts continuous but it does not say how that power is distributed.

Most generators that produce 240 VAC power provide full power on the 240 VAC outlet, but provide the 120 volt power by dividing the 240 volt power into two 120 VAC outlets. That would typically mean only 1500 watts available on each outlet.

I called the distributor but they could not answer how many watts are available for sure on either one of the 120 VAC outlets. So I am guessing it will be about 1750 watts peak and 1500 watts continuous on each of the outlets.

Also note that appliances and equipment with motors typically require two or three times the power to start up, because of the starting power required for their motors. This would include refrigerators, compressors, etc.

Check your appliance manual carefully to make sure your largest intended appliance will start with the power available from this unit.

I read the reviews on everything I buy before making any purchase, this is the first time I have written one. I purchased this generator to put to work powering our race team. My son drives a dirt track micro sprint race car running every Saturday from April to October. This is our second season running this machine and I am amazed how great it is. Unlike another reviewer I do power an air conditioner (Carrier Air V 13,500 BTU roof unit drawing nearly 15 amps at 95 degrees outside temp)while simultaneously powering 6 florescent tube lights and 2 halogen spot lights. This machine is reliable, quiet, light weight and easy to start. If you are considering purchasing one what are you waiting for?
